In Norse mythology, divine begins were divided into three great families: the Aesir, the Vanir and the Jothuns. The dominant family was that of the Aesir, who from their home in the Asgard kingdom dominated the rest of the nine worlds, and whose champion was Thor, son of the chief god Odin and the Earth goddess, and the redheaded god of thunder and lightning, whose rains brought fertility to the ground. He was also the protector of Midgard, the 'Middle-Earth' and realm inhabited by the mankind. With his flying chariot drawn by the two great goats Tanngnjóstr and Tanngrisnir, he traveled through the skies to face the Jothuns, the 'Ice Giants' representing the ancient and destructive forces of Nature, defeating them with his magical hammer Mjolnir ('the Destroyer One'), so powerful that it had to be handled with iron gloves and a magical belt that provided extra strength to the already strong Thor.
